Fanfic: the experiment Ch 1, Sherlock | FanFiction

Well, well — someone is posting A Cure for Boredom on Fanfic.net as if it were their own! They didn’t even change anything, just copied and pasted the text.

Who wants to help take down a plagiarist?

image

support@fanfiction.com

email this, stating your issue and put a link - I have done, but if everyone does it, then they’ll get the idea!

Thank you all so much!! I’m not home yet, but I’m going to do this when I get back.

Can’t understand why people do this.  The plagiarism is stupid enough, but posting it there?  FF.net would likely take it down themselves if they ran across it - they stopped allowing explicit stuff a number of years ago. Quite the pearl clutchers, although apparently they don’t enforce it very well.

Stuffs what I've written

tikistitch:

I put up Chapter 4 of The Disappearing Island yesterday as today is blocked out for Sherlock feels. It’s a Night Vale Victorian AU sort of in the manner of an HG Wells adventure, if Wells hadn’t cared about little things like plot and characterization. There’s two more chapters to go, plus an…

For future reference….

Jim C. Hines » Thoughts After Writing My First Official Fanfiction Story

Remember the Caitlin Moran thing at the Sherlock screening? So Jim Hines has a nice little comment on it. I like his thoughts on writing fanfic.

This.  Is.  FABULOUS!!!

Jim Hines is a good guy. I’m glad he tried his hand at it and gets it. More pro authors—ESPECIALLY the ones who look down their nose at fanfic, ought to try it sometime.

It was a good article and he actually understands!

Reblogging for the night shift.

tikistitch:

I finished posting A Blinking Light up on the Mountains of Madness, my Night Vale 1930s AU.  There are Shoggoths and Nazis and Big Rico’s lunch special and even Elementary Penguins singing Hare Krishna in this one.  We’ve pulled out all the stops!

“Listeners, we’re being invaded by cruel men from another country. And it’s fabulous! Are you part of a neighborhood watch program? We have the most stunning helmets for you to wear, and Big Rico’s is sponsoring torches and pitchforks for your rioting convenience!”

I will get caught up on all of these eventually, I promise.  Hey, and I even watched the 1st two episodes of Supernatural this weekend!

Creepypasta: A Note on Liligant

by ~datadoggieein

The following is the transcript an audio diary by Dr. Andrew Watmon, a free-lance botanist specializing in Grass-Type Pokémon, after he mysteriously disappeared.  Watmon was currently studying the Pokémon lilligant and petilil before his disappearance:

“I’m making this tape so future generations can have a bit of word of warning. If you see a lilligant doing any move that involves pollen or gas or any crap like that, turn your back and hot-tail it, unless you want to be her sister or something like that. You may be wondering ‘What the hell is that mad-man talking about?’ I’ll tell you why…..

Can I just be a proud mom for a moment?  This is fanfiction the oldest fry wrote.  It’s a creepypasta - being a genre of horror short stories.  This one’s based on Pokemon, but I don’t think you need to know much about Pokemon to read it.

I can’t write fiction, so I’m kind of amazed…

Regarding Shipping

brinanners:

Seeing a lot of kvetching and whingeing lately about people who ship non-canon non-heteronormative pairings.

“Why does everything have to be gay with you people?”

“Why all the emphasis on shipping?”

Here’s the thing: if you’re a person who enjoys heteronormative and/or canon ships, you have literally thousands at your disposal. Every show, every movie, every animated series, every comic and novel and radio program has at least one het ship that is, if not canon itself, at least understandable and likely within the context of the canon.

Those of us who like non-heteronormative romantic relationships? The number of options available to us in general media is pitifully small. We have a handful compared to your cornucopia. And then we have fandom.

Fandom is the only place where non-heteronormative romance is given almost equal representation. I’m not just talking gay, here; I’m talking kink, polyamorous relationships, non-binary gender expression and associated roles within relationships, trans* people in romantic relationships, interracial relationships, floppy power dynamics. I’m talking about everything that doesn’t fit the “boy meets girl, boy and girl are happy in their predefined romantic roles, they get married and have babies and live happily ever after” narrative that is so pervasive.

If you like that narrative, that’s awesome. I’m not trying to single anyone out for what they enjoy. Just please, stop bitching about people in fandom being a little overzealous with their non-canon, non-heteronormative ships. We can’t get it anywhere else.

It does show up in science fiction sometimes, but still not often.

“Fan fiction is one of the great unsung popular literary movements of the past 50 years, but finding what you’re looking for online can involve sorting through mountains of inadequately-tagged and frequently dodgy text. Archive of Our Own makes it easy: it’s the most carefully curated, sanely organized, easily browsable and searchable nonprofit collection of fan fiction on the web, and it serves all fandoms equally, from The A-Team to Zachary Quinto and beyond.”

Do things “judder” anywhere outside fan fiction?

Well, the first page of a Google search mostly shows it referring to technical things like engines and video playback, although I can’t say I’ve ever heard anyone use it in speech.

This is me being deliberately literal and answering things that were probably rhetorical.  ;p

Aha, here it is.  More of drabble really - it’s very short and, as above, a phone conversation.  Needs to be more!

Sesshomaru Scribble by *senoritafish
I’m always kind of surprised when someone favorites this at DA, to be honest.  Although by DA standards, 10 faves is infinitestimal, it’s a lot for me.  I doodled it seven years ago in a blank book with cheap gel pens from the 99¢ store, while sitting in the front yard watching the fry chase the cats around and "stupid, stupid pretty hair" was still floating around in my head.
Cripes, that fic is going on 10 years old!  It doesn’t seem like that long ago I read it. <:(

ohfantine:

I’m not a sucker for love stories.

When I say I ship something, I don’t care about the happily ever after. I don’t care about romantic comedies or princess movies with a seamless love arc and a fairytale ending. That isn’t what I’m in it for.

I’m not a sucker for love stories. I’m a sucker for character stories.

I want to read a story in which the characters don’t fit perfectly. Where they complement each other when they’re happy but tear themselves apart in desperate situations. Where their relationship is healthy but not always, equal but not always, happy but not always.

I want to see characters suffer because that’s how I know they’re real.

I don’t ship to be happy. I ship to feel real. I ship because I love relationship dynamics, not relationships themselves. That’s why I don’t just have otps. I have brotps and dream teams and favorite family dynamics and favorite characters alone.

I ship because I like to see how a given character will respond to another given character in any given situation. I like to see how they mesh together, how their personalities match and mismatch, how they push and pull at each other and then come together or fall apart.

I don’t ship for the what of the situation. I ship for the how and the why. Don’t give me characters waywardly thrown together for the perfect puzzle-piece ending. Give me the two people who would seemingly never fit. Make it work. I don’t want fireworks or fairytales. I want realism. Passion and lack thereof. Heat and coldness and love and hate.

Don’t give me love. Give me character. Don’t just tell me. Convince me.

Hmmm. Maybe this is why I’ve never been all that interested in conventional romances, but I do really like fanfiction. I’d always thought it was because it was just the “what if” that never got explored in canon, the escapism, but this is a large part of it too.

But yeah, convince me.  I’m open to just about any ship you care for, as long as you give me a reason.
